Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. A time to gather with family and friends, eat way too much turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, etc., watch the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers toss the pig skin around, and nap. We’ve got plenty to be thankful for: our customers, our business partners and colleagues, and spam! Without spam we may not have all of these other things to be thankful for! Ironic.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

The UK is going all out against state-sponsored hackers and are in the process of recruiting a cyber army. Baroness Crawley says the Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) will be located at GCHQ in Cheltenham and will have an initial staff of 19. Sounds like a jolly good start and us yanks are glad to have you in the fight with us. I can envision the CSOC now: it will be a bunch of computer geeks sitting at their terminals and they will look just like Bond, James Bond or Austin Powers. Yea, baby, yea!

Just in case you haven’t heard the economy has been in a bit of a rough patch. Everyone has been tightening their belts. Well, here’s a ray of sunshine. The Department of Homeland Security has been authorized by the Obama administration to hire as many as 1,000 IT security professionals over the next 3 years. Areas they will be hiring include vulnerability detection, cyber risk and strategic analysis, network and systems engineering, and much more.
Cyber Security Dream Team is the goal
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano made the announcement October 1 during remarks tied to the start of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month:
“Effective cyber-security requires all partners—individuals, communities, government entities and the private sector—to work together to protect our networks and strengthen our cyber-resiliency,” Napolitano said. “This new hiring authority will enable DHS to recruit the best cyber-analysts, developers and engineers in the world to serve their country by leading the nation’s defenses against cyber-threats.”

In an earlier post I discussed energy consumption savings when implementing server virtualization technologies. There are other savings you will realize when you move to a virtual computing environment. Not only can you substantially reduce your energy bills by virtualization but you can also save on hardware and software replacement costs. Virtualization allows you to host many virtual servers on fewer physical servers. Let’s say that you have an environment that has 5 servers running various business applications. When it’s time to replace these 5 servers you could purchase only a couple of servers to run all of these applications in virtual environments. Many businesses run legacy or custom software applications. Upgrading hardware often creates migration issues for moving these applications from their original server environment to their new server environment. If you can place these applications on virtual servers that have been imaged from the original server hardware then you could solve many software/hardware migration issues from occurring. Implementing virtual servers will translate to lower expenditures in numerous ways:
1. Purchase fewer physical servers
2. Use fewer man hours by either your IT staff or outside consultant to deal with migration issues
3. You won’t have to spend additional funds to update the legacy or custom software application(s)
4. Your staff won’t have to go through additional training for new and/or updated software applications and learn the new work flow
5. Reduction in energy consumption
Mailprotector can assist you with lowering your total hardware and software costs. We can provide you with hosted email services to keep your costs down. You don’t have to worry about updating your hardware or software. You don’t have to worry about spending money for IT staff or an outside consultant to work on your email systems. Mailprotector takes care of all of that for you. If you’re considering upgrading your email systems anytime soon and want to reduce your IT capital expenditures you should talk to us about our Hosted Exchange 2007 service or one of our Scan and Store options. We’ll be your virtual mail server providing all the service and support for your email infrastructure while you go on about your business. It’s an easy decision to make in these tough economic times.

I read a recent Fortune article about AT&T’s iPhone offering. Apparently they didn’t anticipate that iPhones would be such bandwidth hogs. They were too excited about their exclusive deal with Apple and the lucrative margins they would earn from the associated voice & data plans. Well, the iPhone users tend to stay on their devices all the time sucking up lots of bandwidth and creating problems for AT&T’s mobile delivery infrastructure.
We at Mailprotector have decided to toss a lifesaver to AT&T to help them through these tough times. We’re offering all of our hosted email services to their business customers: Hosted Exchange 2007, Scan and Forward and Scan and Store. How will the Mailprotector services help alleviate the bandwidth issues for AT&T? There are estimates that 90% of all email traffic is spam related. Mailprotector is going to smack it down. Heck, we’ll even offer this wonderful deal to any business so they can save on their bandwidth costs, too. At Mailprotector, we’re all about helping others solve their messaging security and bandwidth problems.

Hurricane Bill is churning in the Atlantic and threatening Bermuda and the East Coast. Hopefully it will weaken and not cause any damage. Most businesses prepare to protect themselves from the damage these storms can inflict. However, there are numerous accounts of businesses being ill prepared to continue operating after the storm has passed because of an oversight in their business continuity planning.
Email is a preferred communication method. However, email continuity is often overlooked as part of the complete business continuity planning process. Hurricane winds, flooding, fire, etc., can knock an email server out of commission.
Mailprotector’s services – spam filtering and hosted exchange – provide business continuity in the event of mail server outages. Our Scan and Forward service provides mail queuing for up to 7 days if your mail server goes offline for any reason. Once your mail server is back online then your queued messages will be delivered. What if your on-premise mail server will be off-line for longer than 7 days or you need immediate access to your email? We can provide our Advanced Scan and Store service that gives you access to your email via a secure webmail console.
The value of our mail queuing was underscored by one of our customers back in July of 2007. England had been experiencing some of the worst flooding on record, and the shutdown of electricity substations in their region was ordered as a safety precaution. This meant that they had to power down all of their UK-based servers. Mailprotector’s availability protector kicked right in and bailed them out:
“Thanks to Mailprotector’s automatic message spooling we were able to build a replica environment in our US datacenter and be back up and running this morning without any customers experiencing loss of inbound emails.”
Mailprotector’s services are ideal for business continuity and should be made a key component for your business continuity planning.

Today we announced unlimited mailbox storage for Hosted Exchange customers. The new service goes beyond alternative Hosted Exchange offerings by eliminating downtime resulting from restrictive mailbox limits that are exceeded quickly, preventing email access. Our Exchange hosting also slashes the cost of mobile email synchronization and gives users the option of integrating its robust email hosting solution with the Mailprotector premium email security suite, providing highly available email services including exchange spam filtering.
“Email quota management has been a struggle for both users and organizations managing email systems. Quotas reduce productivity by requiring users to manage their mailboxes instead of focusing on more strategic business activities,” said Michael Osterman, founding analyst for Osterman Research. “With 60 percent of organizations having to impose a size quota on email this is a widespread issue and vendors like Mailprotector that cost-effectively overcome this challenge will address a painful business concern.”

We finally launched! Whenever you’re working on something it always takes longer than you want but the group around here is pretty jacked today. We’ve had the new console in partner and end user beta for about 2 months now with a ton of changes along the way. Our marketing and tech folks took the public site from idea to reality in 8 weeks which was awesome. With the public site launch we finally had to bite the bullet and retire the old console. Sorry, I know some of you don’t like change but I promise, you’re gonna love this one. You’ll still see us cleaning a little house here and there but we just couldn’t wait to get it out. I think my favorite is the new pricing page which calculates any service option including Hosted Exchange.
Enjoy the new sites and for our international customers, please join us here in the U.S. this Memorial Day weekend as we honor our fallen soldiers who died to bring freedom around the world.
